MAINTENANCE POSITION OVERVIEW
Sunwapta Falls is a seasonal operation open from May to October. We have 7 departments employing up to 50 seasonal staff per season. We provide onsite accommodation, and all our seasonal staff live and work on property. It’s important to consider this for the maintenance positions we have as some roles include inspecting and repairing staff units, but also living here is a big part of working here.
Our location is 53km south of the town of Jasper. We are in the middle of Jasper National Park surrounded by pure wilderness. The town of Jasper itself, about 45 minutes away, is a small mountain town with a local population of about 4500. Contractors are not always easy to get on short notice, and often maintenance related supplies have to be ordered from Edmonton or Calgary, and we are often forced to find creative same-day solutions to maintenance issues.
Our location means that we are completely off the grid. We have in-house systems for drinking water treatment, power generation, and wastewater treatment all of which are managed in-house with oversight and compliance measures with Parks Canada, Alberta Health and Alberta Environment. There is no cable TV, cell service or high speed internet. We have hardline phones, satellite TV and satellite internet which means limited internet. All of these systems are monitored and worked on under strict guidance by maintenance staff.
The maintenance positions all involve familiarity and various levels of controlled engagement with the systems, buildings, environmental areas and departments at Sunwapta, landscaping and groundskeeping duties as well as catering to in-room guest requests. Maintenance staff have contact with every department on a regular basis, in addition to contact with guests.
